IT advancements bring increased security risks. Complex systems and wide-ranging networks include multiple points of vulnerability. Surprisingly, a recent IDC study shows that while security has become an essential part of IT strategy, many firms sacrifice safety for short-term savings. Rather than setting realistic security goals that balance cost with reasonable risk (no system is 100% secure), many companies adopt an all-or-nothing approach that invests far too much or far too little into what would otherwise be an appropriate system.
Under-investment in IT security often arises from "success." The rapid pace of technology development can leave even the most exceptional systems behind while weak systems that have never suffered an attack appear deceptively strong. Both situations can create environments where threats are imminent. DDoS attacks and the increasing danger of a cyberterrorism makes those ostensibly safe systems increasing vulnerable. Moreover, a significant number of threats arise from within companies, and range in subtlety from policy non-compliance and manager apathy to direct attacks or theft by employees or outside agents using employee access rights.
The IDC IT Security Roadshow CEMA 2004 tackles central issues of IT security. It brings together the technical and human expertise necessary for understanding what's needed for a secure system. Morning presentations focus on broad issues often overlooked when implementing security solutions. Attendees will learn about everything from measuring ROI, setting up enterprise-wide security policies, and enforcing compliance to internal monitoring and outsourcing options. Afternoon presentations will focus on the technical nuts and bolts of security systems: Internet security, identity management, network protection, vulnerability assessment, security systems management, and regulations.
